Brandon
Hardenbrook, Deputy Director of the Pacific Northwest Economic
Region (PNWER), will be traveling to us from Seattle to discuss the
benefits of business involvement in city and regional disaster
planning. This will also commence the planning and coordination
efforts of business involvement in the upcoming 2007 TopOff
exercise, which has great potential to benefit all of us in our
planning endeavors. The Pacific Northwest Economic Region (PNWER) is a statutory, public/private partnership composed of legislators, governments, and businesses in the Northwest states of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington and the Western Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, and the Yukon Territory. PNWER fosters cooperation between public and private enterprise on issues affecting the security, economy and environment of the Pacific Northwest. Brandon currently oversees all Homeland Security related initiatives within PNWER. |

| June16, 2006 | Our speaker for this seminar is Carl Jackson, CISSP, Business Continuity Program Director for Pacific Life Insurance, Newport Beach, California. Mr. Jackson brings more than thirty years’ experience in the areas of continuity planning, information security, information technology internal control, and quality assurance reviews and audits. He has developed and managed the creation of BCP methodologies, metrics, and tools in enterprise-wide business continuity planning for numerous major companies in multiple industries. He has been both a consultant and an inside practitioner over the years, so he knows the challenges of marketing and managing BCP. Carl spent several years in the Portland area and had the distinction of creating the first continuity plan for bank computer operations during the Mt. St. Helens eruption of 1980. The first hour will be devoted to
the proposed partnership of OCPA with the Oregon Natural Hazards Workgroup (ONHW) and Institute for
Business & Home Safety (IBHS). ONHW and IBHS will be co-hosting OCPA's May meeting and are interested in talking with members about: 1) Creating a formal partnership between OCPA and Partners for Disaster Resistance & Resilience (the Partnership) 2) Discussion regarding the Open for Business toolkit and how OCPA members can assist small businesses in the Columbia Gorge Project, and 3) Future projects and opportunities for OCPA and the Partnership to work together to reduce economic vulnerabilities throughout the state. Please review the attached memo and partnership agreement and come with your questions. Already a few of our members have indicated an interest in actively working on this effort. Plus - Tobie Finzel will present a preview of a seminar she is developing for a hospital auditors' conference in September on "Auditing your BC Plan". In addition to her discussion of what auditors should look for in a BC plan, Tobie will ask you to share your experiences with auditors: the good, the bad & the truly ugly. What did the auditors not readily understand about your plan? What are you glad they didn't ask you? Did the audit help convince your management that you really could use more management support or staff? |

Andre LeDuc, Director of the Oregon Natural Hazards Workgroup, will
be traveling to us from Eugene to explain the Showcase State
Initiative and the ‘disaster preparedness’ progress that has been
made throughout the state of Oregon over the past couple years. In addition - Diana McClure, asst. VP Business Protection for the Institute for Business & Home Safety, will be coming to us from Boston, Massachusetts to introduce some opportunities (Business Continuity professionals can even earn CBCP credits) to team with the Showcase State Initiative in order to help our communities become more disaster resistant. She will be raising our awareness about business continuity opportunities, for those of us with full time jobs and for those without, as well as looking for an interactive discussion about the ways our jobs may carry over into the economies of our area. Each attendee will receive a Disaster Planning Toolkit (designed for the small to mid-sized business), as well as other disaster preparedness materials. |

discuss ways we can be involved. She will also be sharing her presentation on

Planning And Recovery Management) group. Steve Woolley will
discuss the Supply
Chain Resiliency at NIKE and Rob McDougald will give a
presentation using GIS to support recovery operations. A tour of the 175 acre, 17 building, 2 million square foot NIKE World Headquarters Campus will be provided after the meeting for anyone that is interested. This is a true icon of sport. We hope to see you there! |

Hosted by the USGS - Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, WA. Thomas Pierson, a research Hydrologist with USGS was the speaker. Part 1 was entitled "Volcano Hazards: What They Are and How Risk Can Be Reduced". Part 2 was "Volcano Hazards in the Cascades - Focus on SW Washington/NW Oregon". The presentations were separated by a tour of their facility. Their presentations also included information on hazard mapping and current local geological events. Their goal was to give us an appreciation for what the hazards are and the role the USGS plays in assessing hazards and monitoring "our" volcanoes. |

We enjoyed a very informative presentation from Mike Mumaw of Washington County. He shared the many lessons learned from the City Hall fire they experienced last year. He also explained the new processes and procedures they are working to put in place to be better prepared in the future. After Mike's presentation the group discussed various safeguards and actions taken by local companies since the September 11th tragedy. The discussions were excellent! |
